I would add that obtaining assent promotes the dignity of the individual and the autonomy, however a clear distinction needs to be made when not providing assent there is potential threat for the safety of this individual or when not providing assent will be a barrier to promote a more independent life for the individual or the possibility of inclusion in general education classrooms and community activities.  Then I guess we go back to obtain the informed consent from parents and guardians. To obtain assent involves pairing, building rapport with client, trust, consequences that will have an impact on the behavior. Also, it is very important to work with the antecedent and motivation.
