The word search assent method according to Kumpunen et al. (2012), was used to ascertain level of comprehension over topics and only used for children who eagerly wanted to do the word search (eagerness assessed by excited voice, wide eyes, participation). The researchers emphasized the word search was a game and not a test. As such they did not ask family members to leave as this would make the process seem to formal. When the participant found a word they were asked to define the word, if they could not the researcher held an informal discussion to define the word. Once the definitions were clear the researchers was able to ask in words for consent.
