I would first ask for additional information to understand the caregiver’s perspective.  I would then aim to educate them on the effectiveness of evidence-based interventions and the importance of using them. If the parent was insistent on using the intervention, I would explain the limitations in my ability to utilize that intervention and perform a lit-search and consult with a colleague. If minimal or no harm were likely, I would work with the caregiver to empirically evaluate the intervention and use data to show if it is effective. If harm could come to the individual if the intervention were used, I would educate the caregiver and set a limit on what I can and cannot do as a BCBA. I would also notify any necessary state agencies if warranted.
