Yes I have observed this in a clinical setting and personally with family members. In a more recent case, a parent I am working with has a child with ASD that has developed a fear of using the toilet. If mom is to suggest that the child try sitting on the toilet, the child will yell “No, all done”. If the mom were to persist and attempt to physically guide the child to the toilet, the child would respond by kicking and hitting the mom. Mom therefore does not attempt further to have him sit on the toilet. At present we are discussing ways of developing more positive associations with the toilet in a gradual fashion.
