There are several ways to create and environment of compassionate care while working with families.

  1. The strength of the therapeutic relationship between the therapist and the family. This is fundamental to achieving the greatest outcomes for the person and their family
  2. The extraneous variables at play and being aware/mindful of how this may affect outcome e.g., additional support from alternate family members, religious beliefs
  3. Hope and or expectancy – establishing realistic goal setting but also enabling hope for the person we are supporting and their family members that things can change, that skills can be taught
