Sometimes I have parents register their teens for therapy or groups in which the teens have no interest in participating. In individual therapy I meet the parent along with the client but mostly engage with the teen. I give examples of goals we could work on together and have them select 1-3 they might be interested in. If they are not interested at all, I do not proceed.
One example i have is a caregiver who was really struggling to manage the behaviour of a teen who was refusing to go to school or participate in any family activities. Of course, the teen felt that there was no problem and was not interested in participating in any intervention or getting any support for this problem.
