As many of my clients are low in functioning level and verbal ability, the details of their histories and whether they have experienced is not known. Therefore, I take a similar approach with all my clients in that I assume that they could have experienced trauma in their lifetimes (indeed, people with disabilities are more likely than the general population to have experienced trauma in some form). I use a client-centered approach, and as much as the person is able, have the client involved from the start in their assessment and treatment planning. I emphasize proactive approaches to addressing challenging behaviours, as well as gentle approaches that help ensure the mental well-being of the people that I support.
